A Not At All Catchy Tune

In the case of Jane Roe v. Henry Wade, District Attorney of Dallas County, on January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court decided in a 7-2 ruling, "the court declared the abortion statutes void as vague and overbroadly infringing those plaintiffs' Ninth and Fourteenth Amendment rights." These amendments protect our rights not directly specified in the constitution and equal protection of the laws.

Much has happened since the decision of the initial ruling. I do not think that in 50 years, activists would have imagined that being a woman in 2022 is not so much different. Suddenly waking up to 6 Supreme Court Justices deciding my reproductive right to choose is not constitutionally protected, allowing the state I reside to determine its legality.

While having a minor study in sociology, it has long been established that western culture has foundations in patriarchal ideals. Patriarchial uncertainty is considered the root of much control of women, including violence against women, sexual and general education restrictions, reproductive care, access to birth control, and political and social power.

However, the overturning is more than just making abortions illegal. It is single-handled, the most violent form of body policing done by the government, removing the right to choose.

Some argue that it should especially stand for women who are victims of rape and incest, but the mental worry of being prepared for a child is of utmost reason. We are still battling a global pandemic, entering a recession, baby formula shortage, school shootings are still on the rise, and employers are not increasing labor wages.

Conservative Republicans insinuate the notion of adoption and foster care, but when we look at those statistics, we see that this system needs reforming. What happens when these children do not have suitable adoptive parents? What happens when they age out of state systems? Will education and governmental assistance be provided? These are essential questions we should be considering.

Black women are statistically more likely to suffer from maternal mortality. What does this mean for states who oppose Roe v. Wade? The racial disparity will continue to climb as women are being forced to give birth to children in a society that will have more racial and financial complications.

I have worries that the physical violence toward pregnant women will also rise tremendously due to nationwide financials regarding reccessionary times.

Mental health for postpartum moms is often overlooked, so does this mean awareness and support will be amplified?

It is okay to have one's personal beliefs on abortion, but it is not okay to place this decision in someone else's hands. God gives us free will, and removing this fundamental, unalienable right, is just the tip of something that can add to the detriment of society. Legally prohibiting abortions will only stop those that are safe.
